Jaipur, India

The Amber Fort is located in Amer, which is located just outside Jaipur.  It dates back to the 16th Century, and for the most part, it is extremely well preserved.  You can see rooms where Indian kings entertained their mistresses, as well as civil halls where commoners came to beg for royal favors.

The most famous room is called the Mirror Palace, or the Sheesh Mahal.  The ceiling is carved with flowers and stars, and pieces of mirrored glass are laid into the walls in order to reflect light.  This room was built for a queen who wanted to see the stars while she slept.  In the ancient days of India, queens were not allowed to sleep in the open air, and so the king who commissioned the palace had this room built for her in order to fulfill her wish without breaking tradition.
