The Secret Canals of Kerala

Alleppey, Kerala, India

The best way to see the most authentic part of Kerala is to take a tour through the backwater canals.  I went with a group of Ukrainians, and we spent the whole day on boats, climbing off at intervals to eat snacks from little shacks next to the canals.  At one point my friend got off and found a bottle of coconut toddy (also known as coconut beer) which is the fermented liquid taken from the top of a palm tree.

Our guide drank more than one bottle, and he was suitably drunk throughout the whole tour.

The best part of the day was seeing everyone cycling through their daily routines - washing their hair, washing their clothes, carrying buckets of water from the river.  It's a side of India that you don't normally see in a guidebook!
